Why study the bible?
My foot hath held his steps, his way have I kept, and not declined. [12] Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food. – Job 23:11-12
One thing in life that is so very important is a correct diet. A correct diet helps to maintain better overall health. I do realize, however, that not all physical sickness is caused by one’s diet. Someone can have a seemingly perfect diet, and still face sickness, and disease. This is because we live in a fallen world, and reap the effects of the fallen-ness of planet Earth.
I know that when hunger comes a knocking, I need to eat some food. Rather than eating cheese twists, and a Dr. Pepper, like I’m doing even as I write this, I KNOW I should be eating that which is necessary to maintain good health.
Spiritually speaking, Job so much wanted to see God, but had to be content in the fact that God could see him. He couldn’t see Him, but could hear Him. He learned to esteem the Word of God as better than his necessary food.
When you are physically hungry do you go for the “necessary” nourishment? Or, do you go for that which has no nutritional value (like cheese twists, and Dr. Pepper)?
When you are spiritually hungry do you gravitate to that which Job esteemed more than necessary food – the Words of God? Or, do you go for that which merely fills you up, and makes you feel good?
One of the biggest problems in the Body of Christ is “spiritual malnutrition.” Either a person is overweight with things that really do not matter, or they are undernourished from not eating the proper food – the Bible!
Yes, many Christians do not ingest, let alone digest, the Word of God, but get their fill from other sources. Even good sources do not equate to God’s Word. It is designed for Christian Growth, and maturity.
If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained. – 1 Timothy 4:6
We often wonder why we live lives of defeat. It’s because we are weak, not nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine.
If the Bible is not your number one source of nourishment, I’m afraid you suffer from spiritual malnutrition.
The NEW MAN needs to be fed with “sound” food.
If the Bible is not of the most importance in your life it’s not to difficult to get back. Step 1 – Open your Bible. Step 2 – Open your Bible. Step 3 – Open your Bible. Now that you have that done, the Bible is now able to open you.
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. – Colossians 3:16
